- be willing to travel
- be ready to go when they call - it may be very early in the morning, days ahead of time or you may only have minutes to head out the door.
- don't say NO (or at very least give a very good reason if you have to turn down work)
- have reliable transport
- be prepared for all circumstances
- have lessons ready for all age groups
- have teaching baskets (folders/cases etc.) prepared for different age groups
- have a map book or street directory and list of all school contact details readily available
- don't be scared to go to harder, more challenging schools
- be willing to teach all grades and areas
- be prepared for duty
- expect last minute changes to your day when you arrive
- always have a pile of back-up lessons readily available
- be willing to teach different classes in the one day
- be willing to do any task (e.g library, walkathons, music, athletics carnivals)
- always have a back up plan
- dress smartly (but comfortably)
- arrive on time (or before time is even better)
- make an effort to introduce yourself to the staff
- always try and meet with the Principal if they are available - just to say hi!
- leave substantial notes for the teacher you are relieving - what you did, any problems, good things - anything!
- take your job very seriously - relief teaching CAN be a full time career !!
SMILE !!!
