Interview Success - Tips from Experienced Interviewers

Preparing for an interview can be a stressful, anxious, challenging time when you're so keen to get started in your teaching career, but most interviewers would say it's the more confident and prepared people who shine on interview day.

Here are a few comments from experienced teachers and Principals who have had the experience of participating on an interview panel, sharing their opinions on what they are looking for during an interview...

Enthusiasm, optimism and relationships!

One Launceston (TAS) Principal begins by pointing out the obvious importance of the usual job description/criteria and duty statement information. "Beyond that", he comments that "you cannot fail to be impressed with optimistic, positive, enthusiastic people who will do anything to get that first break - they want to teach! In other words attitude is vital and can usually be read in peoples eyes. Too often you talk to people who set boundaries for themselves - I am only a ..... instead of, I will have a go at..."

He also believes that a good clue is how teachers talk about children. In his opinion, it is more important to talk of relationships before discussing pedagogy and curriculum issues.
