THEMATIC UNIT OUTLINES

Thematic Unit Focus

"Our Town "

The following ideas could be implemented as individual lessons, or alternatively as an entire thematic unit.

Begin the unit with teacher-in-role as the town mayor holding a town meeting, requesting that people move to your town and help establish a productive town for people to move to and visit. Ask the children to think about the type of role they might play in the new town and how they might support and benefit the community in this role.

* Draw up an advertisement for your new town, or your new business within the town.

* Go for a walk around your town, and do a survey on how many of different types of buildings there are - houses, shops, services.

* Using the box model for your business (see technology) focus on the measurements for your building.

* Draw a big town map on the board and let students design a town including pre-determined or own businesses.

* Teacher-in-role as the Mayor: Hold a town meeting to announce the opening of the new town and discuss what needs the community might have.

* Teacher-in-role as the Mayor: Draw a large blank map on the board and have students act out the role as town planners and hold a meeting to design the business district of the town.

* Students-in-role as members of the community. Offer scenarios (e.g. a child is lost in the mall) and let the students act out in different roles to solve the problems.

* Have a play shop set up in the classroom for children to act out the role of shop keeper and customers - other ideas are hospitals/hairdressers/buses.
