THEMATIC UNIT OUTLINES

Thematic Unit Focus - May 2004

"Celebrating Australia"

The following ideas could be implemented as individual lessons, or alternatively as an entire thematic unit.

* Creative Story Writing - 'From an Australian's point of view, describe Australia to foreigners'.

* Non-fiction writing on Australian animals.

* Re-write the story of the discovery of Australia.

* Make a dictionary of aboriginal words.

* Write a new national anthem for Australia.

* Study aboriginal dreamtime stories and write your own.

* Creative Story Writing - 'Write a story using Aussie Animals as the main characters, set in the outback or the bush'.

* Give an oral report on your favourite thing about Australia.

* Make a poster to advertise Australia to the rest of the world.

* Write a postcard to a friend pretending you are on holiday in Australia.

* Alphabet search of Australian city/town names.

* Write a recipe for a traditional Aussie meal.

 

* Money - focus on coins - Australian animals. Use money in an Aussie shop play area.

* Snake patterns using aboriginal drawings.

* Look at shapes and patterns in aboriginal art.

* Use a picture of Australian animals to do a counting activity.

* Sort australian animal cards into groups - classifying.

* Investigate populations and sizes etc. of the national states and territories.

* Do a class survey on who has visited each state and/or territory.

* Shade the states and territories of Australia on a map and compare their area.

* Make a jigsaw puzzle map of Australia with the states and territories.

* Measure rivers, highways, borders on a map of Australia.

* Measure the perimeter of Australia on a map using a piece of string. Compare it to other continents and countries around the world.

* See how many coins of similar type fit into the shape of Australia or your state/territory and discover how much Australia is worth.

* Sort Australian animal pictures by various attributes (fur, size, habitat).

* Do a timeline of Australian history.

* Investigate lifestyles of Australian Aboriginal people - past and present.

* Learn about famous Australians - past and present.

* Discuss and imagine what Australia might be like in the future - in 10 years, 50 years, 100 years.

* Make short quizzes on basic facts about Australia.

* Discuss the Australian flag - create your own version.

* Investigate state and territories flora and fauna emblems.

* Plot on a map where you might find native flora and fauna around the country. Investigate terrain types and habitats for native animals.

* Write a report about Australian animals and plants.

* Research how aboriginals used to live off the land.

* Recreate the Australia flag using a variety of materials - paper, felt, paint, materials etc.

* On a large map of Australia, use natural materials to recreate the terrain - sand for deserts, grass and leaves for bush, rocks for mountains.

* Create a paper mache Uluru on a board and add extra features showing the natural environment of that area.

* Create a habitat for native animals (place objects in a shoe box).

* Design new Australian stamps and coins.

* Study the Sydney Harbour Bridge and try to recreate it's design.

* Make a book of the classes favourite websites about Australia.

* Do a free hand map of Australia's outline in Microsoft Paint.

* Research Australian topics using multimedia encyclopedias.

* Put Australia quizzes onto a powerpoint presentation or website - show question, click to next screen for answer.

* Do a study of Australia's involvement in the Olympic Games. Have a mini olympic games at school.

* Create and Aussie language dictionary - investigate slang Aussie words.

* Design a cushion cover with native plants and animals.

* Make a class mural with an Australian theme.

* Learn aboriginal and traditional Australian dances.

* Recreate aboriginal dreamtime stories.

* Recreate important historical events in a play - legends, settlers and explorers, great sporting events.

* Invite aboriginal dance groups to perform for your school.

* Study and listen to Australian musicians and bands.

* Learn how to play (or make) aboriginal instruments.

* Watch a video, or invite an aboriginal person to show you how to play a didgeridoo.
